Submitted by emmak on Sat, 18/06/2016 - 06:18

Lazlar Lyricon 3 is the third (coincidentally) in a series of conventions about The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Douglas Adams, the first having occurred in the 1980s. It will take place on 9-11 June 2017 at the Quality Hotel in Stoke-on-Trent.

Last weekend, the Lazlar Lyricon 3 committee had our 1-year-to-go meeting, and a great deal of progress has been made! Our hotel is booked and we already have lots of members, along with several guests and the beginnings of a programme for the weekend.

Guests!

We're pleased to be able to announce our first three guests, Kevin Jon Davies, Mike Cule, and Slartibartfast's Air Car.

Image removed.Kevin has a long and illustrious career as a Hitchhiker fan and professional. He worked on the graphics for the TV series, props and models for the Rainbow Theatre stage production, and produced the photo-illustrated edition of the first Hitchhiker's novel. He also took behind-the-scenes footage during the making of the TV and radio series, and has promised LL3 some exclusive recordings from his archive.

Image removed.Mike has appeared in many different manifestations of Hitchhikers' and has played over a dozen characters, including four different types of Vogon. His roles include the Vogon Guard in the TV series, a Vogon Clerk and Helmsman in the radio series, Prosser in the illustrated edition of the book, and the Dish of the Day in the Rainbow stage show. He also appeared in the cult TV programme Knightmare and is a keen roleplayer and re-enactor.

Image removed. The Air Car had a short but illustrious career as a BBC prop, designed by Jim Francis & built by the BBC effects department, then a longer and less illustrious one as a tomato cloche and garage filler. The committee have undertaken to refurbish it as best they can, and it will be at the convention and available for photo opportunities.

There is more information about all our guests on the Guest Page.

Programme!

The convention programme will kick off at 6pm on Friday and run through to 4pm on Sunday, with a Dead Dog party on Sunday evening for anyone having so much fun that they don't want to leave…. As is traditional, members will be divided into two teams, in this case Mice vs Dolphins, which will compete against each other over the course of the weekend to decide once and for all which is the most intelligent species on the planet.

A list of Programme Items is being added to the website and includes a number of talks by our Guests of Honour along with fun items such as a Vogon Art workshop, Pan Galactic Garglebaster workshop (with Hangover Cure workshop the following morning), Mattress Racing, the Towel Olympics, Live Action Knightmare, Discos, Costume Competitions, and much, much more. There will also be some child-specific programming for ages 10-15, such as Guitar Hero competitions and towel decorating, and some post-watershed adult-only programming, details of which will be available at the convention.

For more details, see the Programme Page.

We already have 60 members & 30 of the 50 hotel room bookings we need to make the con happen! M/ship costs £55 for the weekend for adults and £25 for young adults (under 26).
